DEXTER DICKENS COLLECTION. Vol. V. Prompt copy of the play ''No Thoroughfare'', by Charles Dickens and William Wilkie Collins; circa 1867. The play was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Adelphi, 26 Dec. 1867. The text of the manuscript varies, chiefly by the omission of many brief passages, from that printed by Charles Whiting and Co. 1867, and licensed (Add. 53064, no. 20), 3 Jan. 1868. Both versions differ from R. M. De Witt''s Acting Edition, New York 1868: see Dexter no. 83. Dexter no. 321. According to a note (f. 1v) in Dexter''s hand, the manuscript was acquired among papers of Benjamin Webster, manager of the Adelphi Theatre (d.1882), by William Grose, bookseller, of Kennington. It was later acquired by Joseph F. Sabin, Sotheby''s sale-cat. 18 April 1885, see ff. i-iii.
ff. iii+192. 175 x 115mm. The hand is that of an amanuensis regularly employed by Benjamin Webster, to prepare licenser''s copy (see Add. 53063-53065 passim). Original binding, red leather spine, boards covered in brown-marbled paper.
