Heralds' orders of London funeral processions

Scope & Content:

Twenty-four volumes of heralds’ orders of funeral processions of Lord Mayors and aldermen, etc., of London; 1605–1673. Partly drafts. Each document records the names and order of the mourners; several (Add MS 71131 H, J, M–P, S, U) incorporate notes of heralds present, with their fees, etc.; one (Add MS 71131 Q) includes detailed sketches of pennons carried at the funeral.

Literary figures named include the poets John Donne (Add MS 71131 D), who as Dean of St Paul's also delivered the funeral sermon; Ben Jonson (Add MS 71131 F); and Sir John Suckling (Add MS 71131 N). Also mentioned is Ingram Frizar, assassin of Christopher Marlowe (Add MS 71131 B). Add MS 71131 E, G, H, K–M and O are copied in the hand of Sir Henry St George, the elder (d. 1644), and Add MS 71131 V and X in that of his son Sir Henry the Younger, both of whom were Garter Kings of Arms. The volumes are individually mounted within modern red buckram and (Add MS 71131N) morocco covers.
