Correspondence and literary manuscripts of Edward Falaise Upward (b.1903). Autograph, typewritten, word-processed and printed. Partly drafts. Partly French. Including early poems by W. H. Auden, manuscripts of the Mortmere stories, written jointly by Upward and Christopher Isherwood, and further poetry and prose by Isherwood. For a fictionalised account of the early friendship between Upward and Isherwood at Repton School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and the invention of Mortmere, see Isherwood's novel Lions and Shadows (1938), where 'Chalmers' represents Upward. In the present arrangement of the archive, complete drafts of the early prose works are followed by sections and pages rejected and rewritten during the course of composition. When Upward began to use a word-processor, the first version present is generally a fair copy printout, for which he frequently submitted replacement pages or lists of alterations after its deposit in the British Library. These amendments, showing the evolution of a definitive version, with explanatory covering letters, are placed after the original text. Copies of the periodicals The Ploughshare, published 1934-1938 by the Teachers' Anti-War Movement, and its successor The New Ploughshare, 1938-1939, with contributions by Upward under the pen-name 'Edfu' and by his future wife, Hilda Percival, as 'H.P.', are held in the printed book collections at shelfmarks PP.1126.abd and PP.1181.iai respectively.
