Papers of Henry Hallam, historian, (b.1777, d.1859), his wife Julia Maria Hallam née Elton, (b.1783, d.1840) of Clevedon Court, Somerset and of four of their children: Arthur Henry Hallam (b.1811, d.1833), Eleanor Hallam, also known as ‘Ellen’, (b.1816, d.1837), Julia Maria Frances Lennard née Hallam (b.1817, d.1888), and Henry Fitzmaurice Hallam (b.1824, d.1850); together with papers of later members of the family; 1778–1983. The papers of Arthur Henry Hallam include poems by his friend Alfred Tennyson and by other members of the Tennyson family.

Julia Maria Frances married Captain John Cator (afterwards, on inheriting a Kentish baronetcy, Sir John Lennard) in 1852 and she inherited the earlier papers described here. The papers passed down through the Lennard family until the 1960s when Sir Stephen Lennard of Vancouver, the last baronet, (b.1899, d.1980) presented them to Sir Arthur Elton (b.1906, d.1973), the tenth baronet and the great- great-grandson of Julia Maria Hallam’s elder brother. A notebook containing poems in autograph by Arthur Henry Hallam is Add. MS 74090 A, described in The British Library Journal, XXXV, 2 (1999), pp. 212-233. Correspondence of Henry Hallam with W. E. Gladstone, 1833-1853, is held at Add. MSS 44353–44371 passim; correspondence of Arthur Henry Hallam with W. E. Gladstone, 1826-1832, is held at Add. MS 44352, ff. 1-222 passim; and letters of Henry Fitzmaurice Hallam to W. E. Gladstone, [1840]-1841, are at Add.MSS 44357 and 44358 passim.
