1. ff. 1-1v. Typewritten letter, signed, from Margaret, Lady Elton to Elizabeth Lennard, 21 June 1970 concerning the transfer of Hallam papers from Sir Stephen Lennard.
2. ff. 2-3v. Letter, signed, from Frances M. Brookfield to Miss Lennard, 19 August 1905, speaking of her attraction to Henry Fitzmaurice Hallam.
3. ff. 4-5. Two letters, signed, from Philip Gaskell, Librarian of Trinity College, Cambridge, 29 April 1969 and 7 July 1970, concerning some Hallam material acquired from Elizabeth Lennard.
4. ff. 6-8. Three typewritten letters, signed, from Gwin (Jack) Kolb of the University of California to Elizabeth Lennard, 1972-1973, speaking of his continuing the unfinished work of T. H. Vail Motter (d.1970) of Princeton.
5. ff. 9-10. Two typewritten letters, signed, from Jack Kolb to Sir Stephen Lennard, 1971 and 1976, concerning his forthcoming edition of Arthur Henry Hallam’s letters.
6. ff. 11-22. Eleven typewritten letters, signed, from Jack Kolb to Margaret, Lady Elton, 1971-1983, relating to his work on the letters.
7. ff. 23-32v. Three letters, signed, from Sir Stephen Lennard in Canada to his sister Elizabeth Lennard, 1953-1969, concerning, among other things, Lennard material given to the Kent Archives Office and comments on T. H. Vail Motter.
8. ff. 33-34. Letter, signed, from Marjorie Madan to Lady Lennard, 15 December 1947, concerning Hallam papers given to Trinity College, Cambridge.
9. ff. 35-40. Six typewritten letters, signed, from J. F. A. Mason, Librarian of Christ Church, Oxford, to Elizabeth Lennard, 1968-1981, speaking of the Hallam papers already acquired by the library and asking if there are more still in the family’s hands.
10. ff. 41-43v. Two letters, signed, from T. H. Vail Motter to Mrs Michael Chard, sister of Elizabeth Lennard, 1968, suggesting where items in the Hallam collection may be deposited or sold and speaking of unpublished poems in a notebook of Arthur Henry Hallam in the family’s possession.
11. ff. 44-50. Various fragments from T. H. Vail Motter’s notes and a typewritten list of Mrs Chard’s Hallam papers compiled in 1968.
12. ff. 51-76. Seventeen letters, some typewritten, all signed, with some additional ms notes attached, from T. H. Vail Motter to Elizabeth Lennard, 26 August 1967 – 23 November 1969. He suggests valuations for Hallam items and speaks of the post mortem report on Arthur’s death, Mrs Chard’s collection, family portraits and missing copies of Arthur Hallam’s Poems (1830) once seen in 1935.
13. ff. 77-81. Four typewritten letters, signed, from T. H. Vail Motter to Sir Stephen Lennard, 28 March -5 June 1969, containing suggestions for the disposal of the Hallam collection in the family’s possession and attempts on his part to extricate himself from a difficult misunderstanding with Sir Stephen.
14. ff. 83-95. Eleven letters, mostly typewritten, all signed, from T. H. Vail Motter to Sir Arthur Elton, 15 July 1968 – 24 January 1969, some also addressed to Margaret, Lady Elton, and one also addressed to their daughter Julia Elton. They concern, among other things, Mrs Chard’s and Elizabeth Lennard’s collections, disposal of items and his fear that items may become unavailable for scholars.
15. ff. 96-96v. Letter, signed, from Winifred A. Myers, dealer in manuscripts, to Elizabeth Lennard, 21 May 1970, telling her of the sudden death of T. H. Vail Motter.
16. ff. 97-98. Two typewritten letters, signed, from J.C. Pearson of Cleveland, Ohio, to Sir Stephen Lennard, 1939, offering for sale a document, dated 1642, concerning land disputes in the Horton family.
17. ff. 99-102v. Three letters, signed, from Sir Charles Tennyson (b.1879, d.1977), in his capacity as a Vice-President of the Tennyson Society, to Elizabeth Lennard, 1963, n.d., asking permission to publish the poems in a manuscript notebook of Arthur Henry Hallam’s once owned by Emily Tennyson Jesse and deposited by Sir Charles in The Usher Gallery, Lincoln. He also draws her attention to a photograph of a portrait said to be of Arthur, sent to him by Mrs Rhoda Brennan [Brenand?] whose grandmother was an Elton. The National Portrait Gallery, he says, affirm that it is a portrait of Arthur.
18. f. 103. Photograph of a portrait of a youth said to be Arthur Henry Hallam; half-length, seated, half-profile facing right. Inscription in Sir Charles Tennyson’s hand on the verso where there is also the ink stamp of the National Portrait Gallery. This is the photograph he refers to in his letters to Elizabeth Lennard.
19. ff. 104-105. Letter, signed, from Ronald Cox (?) of Sanderstead, to Elizabeth Lennard, 23 May 1954 (?) concerning documents relating to the early history of Wickham Court.
