Scope & Content:

The archive of the Graham family of Norton Conyers, co. Yorkshire, including the papers of Sir Richard Graham, 1st Bart. of Esk, Cumberland (d. 1653), Master of the Horse to George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, and Henry Slingsby of Kippax, co. York. (b. 1619, d. 1690), Master of the Mint to Charles II; 1597-1782, n.d. The collection also includes a few papers of Sir Richard Musgrave (d. 1619), which must have passed into the Graham family when Sir Richard Graham married Catherine Musgrave, granddaughter of Sir Richard Musgrave. The Grahams and the Slingsbys were related by marriage via Elizabeth Fortescue (d. 1705), granddaughter of Sir William Slingsby of Kippax and wife of Sir Richard Graham, 1st Bart. of Norton Conyers (b. 1636, d. 1711), which may explain how the Slingsby papers found their way into the Graham archive. The collection was calendared by the Historical Manuscripts Commission, 6th Report (1877), pp 322-344, when in the possession of Sir Reginald Graham, 8th Bart. (b. 1835, d. 1920). Purchased, with Additional Charters 77167-77176, from Sir James Graham, 11th Bart., by private treaty, April 2004.
