Papers of Mary, Viscountess Eccles (b.1912, d.2003) relating to Oscar Wilde (b.1854, d.1900) and others; 1817-2003, n.d. Autograph, typewritten and printed. Partly French. The Bequest was formed by Mary Eccles, book collector, philanthropist and member of the American Friends of the British Library. Mary Eccles began collecting with her first husband Donald Frizell Hyde (b.1909, d.1966), a lawyer and collector. They started by acquiring correspondence of Oscar Wilde and Reginald Turner (b.1869, d.1938), subsequently expanding the collection to include all correspondence of Oscar Wilde, his friends, associates and other notable figures, including Lord Alfred Bruce Douglas (b.1870, d.1945). The range of material they collected also expanded to include books, manuscripts, portraits and photographs. This collection complements the Department's existing holdings of Oscar Wilde's manuscripts, most notably Add. 37942-37948 and 50141 A, B, presented by his executor Robert Ross. The British Library Sound Archive holds recordings of plays by Oscar Wilde. Other significant collections of related material are deposited at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Morgan Library and Museum, New York.

Most of Wilde's own letters in the collection are published in Merlin Holland and Rupert Hart-Davis (eds.), The complete letters of Oscar Wilde (2000). The present catalogue is arranged by material type rather than by individual. Within each section, the Oscar Wilde material is catalogued first, followed by material relating to other people in alphabetical order. Presented in 2004, and catalogued with the generous support of Dr Bill Zachs.
