81973-82037. Correspondence and papers of Sir Michael de Courcy Fraser Holroyd (b. 1935) assembled for his work in writing biographies of (Giles) Lytton Strachey, and other works relating to Strachey and the Bloomsbury Group, for work stemming from the biographies and for the work of the Strachey Trust; 1900-2001, n.d. Partly copies. Partly typewritten, photocopies, signed and printed. Most of the letters are addressed to Michael Holroyd, although there are some drafts and photocopies of letters from him. The papers of the Strachey family which were used extensively by Michael Holroyd in writing his biographies and were then in the care of Lytton Strachey’s brother James and his wife Alix, are now at Add. 60631-60735 and 81885-81972. The biography was first published as Lytton Strachey: a critical biography. Vol. 1: the unknown years (1880-1910) (Heinemann, 1967) and Lytton Strachey: a critical biography. Vol. 2: the years of achievement (1910-1932) (Heinemann, 1968). It was then re-cast into two books as Lytton Strachey: a biography (Penguin, 1971) (reprinted with revisions, 1979) and Lytton Strachey and the Bloomsbury Group: his work, their influence (Penguin, 1971). The former of these volumes was published as a hardback, with different illustrations, by Heinemann, 1973. The whole work was revised and re-arranged, with considerable deletions and additions, as Lytton Strachey (Chatto and Windus, 1994); the sub-title ‘the new biography’ appears on the spine and jacket of the work, and not on the title-page, but the title Lytton Strachey: the new biography is used hereafter to distinguish this work from its predecessors. Papers and correspondence for other works are at Add. 82014-82024. The work of the Strachey Trust is reflected both in selling the papers of Lytton Strachey to the British Museum and subsequently sponsoring and publishing the Location Register of English Literary Manuscripts, compiled at the University of Reading, and the project ‘Writers and their Copyright Holders’, papers and correspondence relating to these activities are at Add. 82026-82030. The following items have been passed to the collections of the National Sound Archive: cassette tape recordings of Strachey’s Elizabeth and Essex read by Jill Masters and of a broadcast talk by Virginia Woolf, a compact disc recording of Strachey’s Ermyntrude and Esmeralda and a videotape of the film ‘Carrington’. Purchased 2001.
