Strachey/Holroyd Papers. Vols. liv-lviii. Correspondence relating to the work of the Strachey Trust; 1969-2001. The Strachey Trust was established by Alix Strachey after the death of her husband James, with the main purpose of ‘searching out by all available means of manuscripts and the establishment by mechanical processes or otherwise and the maintenance for the benefit of the public of a register of manuscripts so discovered being a register indicating the nature of the manuscript and where it is kept’. To fund the Trust, Alix Strachey gave it Lytton Strachey’s papers, which it sold to the British Library, and, at her death in 1973, willed Lytton’s, James’s and her own copyrights to the Trust (her letters relating to the foundation of the Trust are at Add. 81995). The register developed into the Location Register of English Literary Manuscripts and Letters at the University of Reading, and was continued by the project ‘Writers and their Copyright Holders’ (the ‘WATCH Project’). Michael Holroyd was a founding Trustee of the Strachey Trust and later its Chairman, serving also on the management committees of the Register and of the WATCH Project as the representative of the Royal Society of Literature. The following papers are divided into a general section and papers covering the different activities of the Trust, and include letters to Michael Holroyd, photocopies of letters from Michael Holroyd and of other correspondence copied to him by the project officer and others.
