HARVEY DIARIES. Diaries, with related correspondence and papers, of Sir Oliver Charles Harvey (b.1893, d.1968), 4th Bart., 1st Baron Harvey of Tasburgh 1954, Foreign Office official and diplomat; 1936-1946. Partly pencil. Some copies. The material is chiefly of the period when Harvey was Principal Private Secretary to Robert Anthony Eden, K.G. 1945, 1st Earl of Avon 1961, and Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 3rd Viscount and (1944) 1st Earl of Halifax, Secretaries of State for Foreign Affairs. An abridged text, edited by the Hon. John Wynn Harvey, has been published as The Diplomatic Diaries of Oliver Harvey 1937-1940 (1970) and The War Diaries of Oliver Harvey (1978). Harvey's account (Add. 56385, ff. 76-211, 56396) of his service in France in 1940 as Minister at the British Embassy is supplemented by the reports (Add. 56401, ff. 173-190) he prepared for the Ambassador. The description of his conversation with Sir Stafford Cripps which is printed in The Diplomatic Diaries, pp. 351, 352, as part of the entry for 23 April 1940, is taken from this source (Add. 56401, ff. 188-190). Additional information on foreign visits made by Harvey in 1945 and 1946 is provided by his official memoranda (Add. 56402, ff. 37-49). Presented by Lord Harvey of Tasburgh in 1966.
