Scope & Content:: Original letters and papers, mainly of the 19th and 20th centt., selected from the collection of Charles Davies Sherborn, D.Sc. (d. 1942), which was formed largely in connection with his work at the British Museum (Natural History). The collector's own scheme of classification and alphabetic arrangement has been retained (cf. Brit. Mus. Quart., vi, 1931-1932, PP. 93-94). Many of the letters come from the correspondence of Sir Richard Owen, Superintendent of the Natural History Departments of the British Museum, in whose Life, by his grandson, the Rev. Richard Startin Owen (2 vols., 1894), Sherborn collaborated (cf. J. R. Norman, Squire: Memories of Charles Davies Sherborn, 1944, pp. 65, 88; cf. also. Add. MS. 42581, ff. 247-25ob), and from whose papers Sherborn also presented Add. MSS. 39954, 39955, two volumes of correspondence which he had been given by the Rev. R. S. Owen. The total number of persons represented by autographs is approximately 1800. The names of the writers are given in the Index to this Catalogue. Eleven volumes. Paper. Folio.
