Bible in the Vulgate version, with St. Jerome's Epistle to Paulinus and prefaces, tables of chapters, and Gospel canons. At the beginning and end of each volume are fragments of other manuscripts which were fastened down as a lining to the covers:
Add MS 28016: The Book of Genesis to the Book of Malachi (232 folios)
Add MS 28107: The Book of Job to the Book of Revelations (241 folios).
For the decoration, Usener, in L’art Mosan (1953), distinguished four hands, while Dynes in Stavelot Bible (1978), pp. 89-93, proposed five artists: in the two volumes he counted 54 initials by the artist he called Master of the Minor Prophets, 11 by the Pentateuch Master, 2 by the Jeremiah Master, 6 by the Majesty Master, and 25 by the Luke Master. Cahn, in Romanesque Bible Illumination (1982), pp. 130-31, suggested one artist for the Genesis initial and for most of the historical books and another, probably Goderannus, for most of the Prophets, Ezra through Esther, and a large part of the New Testament initials. Cahn attributed the Christ in Majesty to another master, perhaps Ernesto, and Luke in the prologue to his Gospel and other initials to a different artist.

Provenance:
The Benedictine abbey of St Remacle of Stavelot (founded in 651), produced here between 1094 and 1097 by Goderannus and Ernesto, as stated in the dated scribal colophon on f. 228r; an ownership inscription of the Stavelot library 'Ecclesie diui remacli in Stabulao', f. 2r); a catalogue of the library copied on f. 228v in 1105, as printed in Jean Gessler 'Les catalogues des bibliotheques monastiques de Lobbes et de Stavelot', Revue d'Histoire ecclesiastique, 29 (1933), 82-96 and seen in the library in 1724 by Martène and Durand, Voyage littéraire (1724). Sold with other manuscripts from the Stavelot library at auction in Ghent in 1847 (see Dynes, Stavelot Bible (1978) p. 28).
Hubert-Pierre David-Fischbach Malacord (b. 1831, d. 1914) of Stavelot, mayor of Ferrières, acquired by him with in his library between 1863 and 1869, when the library catalogue and colophons were transcribed by Jean-Joseph Thonissen (see Dynes, Stavelot Bible (1978) p. 28). Purchased from him by the British Museum, 8 May 1869.

'BIBLIA sacra: the vulgate version, with St. Jerome's Epistle to Paulinus and prefaces, tables of chapters, and Gospel canons, Two volumes. At the beginning and end of each volume are fragments of other MSS., which were fastened down as a lining to the covers. Those in Vol. i. include portions of St. Augustine's "Enarratio in Psalmos" of the xth cent., and of a Psalter of the xiith cent.; and those in Vol. ii. fragments of a treatise in Lombardic characters of the xiith cent., and letters of the Dean and Chapter of the Abbey of St. Peter at Malmédy relative to a bequest to the church in 1449. Vellum. At the end of each volume, ff. 228, 240, are inscriptions stating that they were written by Goderannus and Ernestus, monks of the abbey of St. Remaclo at Stabloo, or Stavelot, in Belgium, and illuminated and bound within four years ending in 1097. The larger initials are illuminated and enclose miniatures; and in Vol. ii., f. 136, is a nearly full-page painting of Christ, with the emblems of the four Evangelists in the corners. Some of the initials in Vol. i. have been cut out. Bound in thick wooden boards covered with leather, fastened by thongs and brass clasps. Large Folio'.
