From the printed Catalogue of Additions (1894), pp. 59-60:
'OFFICIAL PAPERS and correspondence relating to the transactions between England and Scotland carried on through the agency of Sir Ralph Sadleir, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. They embrace three several periods, viz., Aug. 1559-April, 1560; Nov. 1569-Feb. 1572; and April, 1584 - April, 1585. Four volumes. Paper. Folio. The first two volumes contain, with a few earlier documents, the correspondence of Sadleir. when stationed at Berwick, and subsequently acting as Warden of the East and Middle Marches of England, Aug. 1559-April, 1560. All the joint letters of Sadleir and his colleagues are drafts in his own hand. The third volume chiefly contains his correspondence while acting as Treasurer of the " Northern " Army during the insurrection of the Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland, Nov. 1569-March, 1570. Sadleir's letters are holograph drafts. The fourth volume principally deals with the captivity of Mary, Queen of Scots, at Wingfield and Tutbury Castles under Sadleir's custody during the absence of Lord Shrewsbury at the Court to plead his cause with Qu. Elizabeth against the machinations and slanders of his own wife. Sadleir's letters are drafts, chiefly in the hand of his private secretary, Sir John Sommer.
These letters and papers were edited in 1809 at Edinburgh by Arthur Clifford, a direct descendant of Sir Ralph Sadleir, from transcripts made by Rev. John Kirk, of Lichfield. The originals were then at Tixall Hall, co. Stafford, the ancient seat of the Astons, whither they were removed from Standon Lordship, co. Hertford, the seat of Sir R. Sadleir, on the marriage in 1762 of Hon. Barbara Aston with Hon. Thos. Clifford, son of Hugh, 3rd Lord Clifford, by whose son Sir Thos. Clifford Constable, Bart., these papers were again removed to his seat at Burton Constable, co. York. Hon. Barbara Aston was directly descended from Gertrude Sadleir, granddaughter of Sir Ralph, by her marriage in 1584 with Sir Walter Aston of Tixall.
Arthur Clifford, the editor, was brother of Sir T. Clifford Constable, 1st Bart., by whose grandson, Sir F. A. T. Clifford Constable, 3rd Bart., the collection was sold in 1889, after having remained uninterruptedly in Sir R. Sadleir's family from the time of his death in 1587.'
