Sir Ralph Sadler (b. 1533, d. 1603), diplomat and administrator: his collection of papers and correspondence.
?Gertrude Sadler (b. before 1592, d. after 1639), Lady Aston: daughter of Sir Thomas Sadler (b. c. 1536, d. 1607) and granddaughter of Sir Ralph Sadler; she became the second wife of Walter Aston, 1st Lord Aston of Forfar (b. 1584, d. 1639) of Tixall, Staffordshire in 1607.
Barbara Aston (d. 1786): daughter and coheir of James, 5th Lord Aston of Forfar (b. 1723, d. 1751), direct descendant of Gertrude Sadler and Walter Aston; married Thomas Clifford (b. 1732, d. 1787) in 1762.
Sir Thomas Hugh Clifford (later Constable), 1st baronet (b. 1762, d. 1823), topographer and botanist: son of Barbara Aston and Thomas Clifford; his brother Arthur Clifford (b. 1777, d. 1830) edited and published the letters in 1809 from transcripts made by Rev. John Kirk of Lichfield. In 1821, Sir Thomas Hugh Clifford inherited the Yorkshire estates of his kinsman Francis Constable (d. 1821) and subsequently moved the letters from Tixall to Burton Constable, Yorkshire (see the printed Catalogue of Additions (1894), p. 60).
Sir Thomas Aston Clifford, 2nd baronet (b. 1807, d. 1870), of Burton Constable, Yorkshire, and Tixall Hall, Staffordshire, Member of Parliament: heritor of Burton Constable.
Sir Frederick Augustus Talbot Clifford, 3rd baronet (b. 1828, d. 1894): heritor of Burton Constable.
The four volumes were purchased by the British Museum at the sale of the Burton Constable manuscripts, Sotheby's, London, on 24 June 1889, for the sum of £405 (lot 151).
