DELLA CHIESA HISTORIES: Works of Francesco Agostino Della Chiesa relating to Piedmont, with anonymous supplements; before 1663. Italian and Latin. Copies, late 18th cent. Francesco Agostino Della Chiesa (circa 1593-1663), Bishop of Saluzzo, was advisor and Court historian of Duke Victor Amadeus I of Savoy. Copies of his unfinished Descrizione del Piemonte are preserved in Turin, Archivio di Stato, Manoscritti, H. VI. 1-5, I, Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria, MSS. O. II. 6-12 (possibly damaged by the fire of 1904), and Biblioteca ex-Reale, Manoscritti, Storia Patria 173. For Della Chiesa see G. G. Loya, 'Elogio di Gioffredo, Lodovico, Giovanni Antonio e Francesco Agostino Della Chiesa', in Piemontesi illustri, vol. iv (Turin, 1784), pp. 46-59, 114-138; DBI, 36 (1988), pp. 748-751, with detailed bibliography of MSS. of his works in the libraries and state archive in Turin. 'B.1.' in pencil in upper part of f. iii verso of all MSS. Armorial bookplates of 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark 'L/17/C' (front pastedowns). '519' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedowns. Purchased, together with Add. 8549, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 519 (part).
Three volumes. 19th-cent. gilt-tooled quarter bindings of blue morocco with decorated paper covers over pasteboards, possibly made for the 5th Earl of Guilford.
