"WHITELOCKE'S Annales of his own Life, dedicated to his children,"by Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (b. 1605, d. 1675), Keeper of the Great Seal, and Ambassador to Sweden (1653- 1654). Autograph. Seven volumes. Paper. Small folio. Between Vols. II. and III. a volume is missing, containing the first 29 years of the author's life, and Vol. VII. ends with the Swedish embassy. For a description of the volumes, when owned by Earl Delawarr, see Hist. MSS. Comm., Appendix to Third Report (1872), pp. 217, 218. The missing volume was then already absent. The Annals as a whole have never been printed; but the Memorials of English Affairs (1682, second edition 1732, reprint 1853) are extracted from them. Autobiographical extracts are also printed in R. H. Whitelocke's Memoirs of Bulstrode Whitelocke, 1860; he, however, had knowledge only of the volume now missing (see p. 124). Dr. C. Morton published the Journal of the Swedish Ambassy, 1772, from other MSS. now in the British Museum (see below), re-edited (1855) by H. Reeve. Dr. Morton was also only aware of the volume now missing in this set (vol. i., Dedication). The two volumes among the MSS. of the Marquis of Bute (see Hist. MSS. Commission, Appendix to Third Report, p. 202) may belong to and complete the set, unless they are correctly described as containing the whole of Whitelocke's life, and not the beginning and end only. The "Treatise of the Work of the Sessions of the Peace" in Essays Ecclesiastical and Civil, by Sir B. Whitelocke, 1706, was extracted from Vol. III., ff. 15-50 b, by his son Carleton Whitelocke, in whose hand are the annotations. The contents of the volumes are :-
