WHITELOCKE'S ANNALS. Vols. VI., VII. (ff. 281, 331). "The History of Whitelocke's Ambassy from England to Sweden, with notes thereuppon, etc."; Sept. 1653-June, 1654. Vol. VII. is partially in the hands of clerks. Between ff. 189 and 190 of Vol. VI. six leaves have been cut out, containing a discourse to the Swedish chancellor on tyrants. With a table of chapters prefixed, and an index in both volumes. The title has the note "Published by Carleton Whitelocke, of the Middle Temple, Esq., son of Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke," etc., in the hand of the said Carleton Whitelocke. This must refer to an intended edition probably frustrated by his death during the publication of Essays Ecclesiastical and Civil, 1706, mentioned above. Dr. Morton's edition (see above) was edited from Add. MS. 4902, supplemented by Add. MSS. 4991 A, B, 4992,4994, 4995. Small portions of the embassy are also contained in Add. MS. 31984, and Eg. MS. 997. Another MS. is described among the MSS. of the Marquis of Bath, see Hist. MSS. Comm., Appendix to Third Report, p. 190. The present volumes are the original of Dr. Morton's "larger MS." (see Journal of the Swedish Ambassy, vol. ii., pp. 454, 458, etc.), now Add. MS. 4991 A, B, the numerous passages marked here by lines in the margin being omitted in that copy.
