Title:

LETTER-BOOKS and Minute-books of George Eden, 2nd Baron (1814) and 1st Earl (1839) of Auckland, Governor-General of India; 1836-1842. Lord William Bentinck, his predecessor, had returned to England in March, 1835, and Lord Auckland, who was appointed in the following September, arrived in India early in March, 1836, the provisional government having been carried on meanwhile by Sir Charles Metcalfe. His first letter, dated 13 Mar. 1836, to Maj. Sir James Rivett Carnac, Chairman of the E. India Co., gives an account of his reception at Calcutta and his first impressions of the country. The correspondence is largely devoted to the affairs of Afghanistan, and in a letter, dated 28 Jan. 1842, to his successor Lord Ellenborough he tries to justify his policy, which had just ended in the retirement from Cabul and the destruction of the British forces.
