"PRIVATE LETTERS," sc. letters of a confidential nature written by Lord Auckland (with a few from his; secretaries) to the following, among others, viz. Col. Sir. Henry Pottinger, Resident in Sindh, Sir Robert Grant, Governor of Bombay, John, Lord Elphinstone, Governor of Madras, Sir Charles Metcalfe, Lieut. Gov. of the N.W. Provinces (till his retirement in 1838), and Thomas Campbell Robertson, his successor, Sir John Cam Hobhouse, President of the Board of Control (the original letters are in Lord Broughton's correspondence, Add. MSS. 36473, 36474, and other copies in Egerton MS. 2427), Sir James Rivett Carnac, Governor of Bombay (1838), Sir William Hay Macnaghten (sent Envoy to Afghanistan in 1838), and Sir Jasper Nicolls, Commander-in- Chief in India; 1836-1842. Nineteen volumes. Volumes are apparently missing after Vole. IV. and VIII.
