MIDDLETON PAPERS, consisting mainly of the official correspondence of Charles Middleton, 2nd Earl of Middleton, Secretary of State from 1684 till the flight of James II, with a few earlier papers of previous Secretaries of State, 1660-Nov. 1688 and n.d.

Scope & Content:

Cf. Brit. Mus. Quart., iv, 1929-1930, pp. 80-82. A number of letters are addressed to his secretary, Dr Owen Wynne (see above), whose family inherited the papers and added the later, mostly 18th cent., collections, Add. MSS. 41843-41845. The final volume (Add. MS. 41846) consists of the papers of Sir Kenelm Digby (163.6/7- 1663). Forty-four volumes. Folio, unless otherwise stated.

Acquired from the descendants of Dr Owen Wynne, LL.D., who as clerk or secretary in the Secretary of State's office (cf. his duties as detailed in 41806, f. 66b) dealt with much of the official correspondence, and to whom personally many letters are addressed. From Wynne (d. 1700), whose wife was Dorothy, sister of Narcissus Luttrell, the papers were inherited by his son William Wynne, serjeant-at-law, who by his wife Grace, daughter of William Brydges, serjeant-at-law, left two sons, Edward and Luttrell.On the death of the latter (1814) the papers passed to his cousin Edward William Stackhouse of Pendarves, who dropped the name Stackhouse and assumed the names Wynne and Pendarves.
