MIDDLETON PAPERS. Vols. XXXII-XXXIX. Letters from Edmond Poley and Sir George Etherege, Residents at Ratisbon, to successive Secretaries of State, 1682-1688. Other letters of Poley, Feb. 1681- May 1683, are in Add. MSS. 37986, 37987. Of those of Etherege, a certain number (e.g. Add. MS. 41836, ff. 68-208 passim) are in the hand of his secretary, Hugh Hughes, who has also copied many of them into two letterbooks (one now Add. MS. 11513, from which they have been edited by S. Rosenfeld, The Letterbook of Sir George Etherege, 1928; for the second letter-book see W. H. Robinson, Ltd., Catalogue no. 77, 1948, no. 188). Vols. XXXVI-XXXIX consist of former enclosures in letters of Poley and Etherege, and comprise copies of reports of proceedings in the Diet of Ratisbon, diplomatic correspondence, newsletters from Vienna, Breda, Linz, Wels, Passau, etc., and similar material relating especially to French designs and the progress of the war in Hungary against the Turks.
