Correspondence and papers of Major George Broadfoot, C.B., of the Madras Army (b. 1807, d. 1845); together with other documents collected by Major William Broadfoot, of the Royal Engineers, and used in the compilation of his work, The Career of Major George Broadfoot, C.B., 1888. Major George Broadfoot entered the Madras Army in 1825. In 1841 he escorted the family of the Amir Shah Shuja to Kabul, and raised a corps of sappers for service under that monarch, in command of which he distinguished himself during the First Afghan War. He was garrison engineer of Jalalabad during the famous siege (1841- 1842), was appointed Commissioner of the Tenasserim Provinces in 1843, and was promoted in 1844 to be Political Agent to the Governor-General for the North-West Provinces. On the outbreak of the First Sikh War he served as aide-de-camp to Sir Henry Hardinge, and was killed at the battle of Firozshah, 21 Dec. 1845.
