JESSOP PAPERS
Miscellaneous correspondence and papers of William Jessop (d. 1675) of Holborn and (1662) Gray's Inn, attorney to Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick, Secretary to the Committee of Admiralty 1645-1648, member of the Committee for taking the accounts of the Commonwealth, and Assistant Secretary to the Council of State 1653; Clerk of the Council of State 1654, and of the House of Commons, 1660. Vols. I, II comprise correspondence of, or relating to the affairs of, Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex (d. 1646), to whose executors Jessop also acted as attorney. For an account of Jessop's papers (not all of which are included in the present volumes) see Hist. MSS. Commission, 12th Report, Appendix ix, 1891, pp. 165-178. The collection of letters from Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, to Queen Elizabeth I, etc. (ibid., pp. 106-172, nos. i-li; cf. W. B. Devereux, Lives and Letters of the Devereux, 1853, i, pp. 207 sqq. passim), is now MS. Loan 23. See also Add. Ch. 71765-71797; cf. Add. MS. 10615. Jessop's only daughter Anne married William Hulton (d. 1694), from whom the papers descended to the donor. The names of the writers of letters are given in the Index to the present Catalogue.
