KNIGHTLEY MANUSCRIPTS

Scope & Content:

A collection of autographs formed chiefly by Louisa Mary (d. 1913), wife of Sir Rainald Knightley, 3rd Bart. (Baron Knightley 1892), who was Lady-in-Waiting to the Duchess of Albany (see J. Cartwright, The Journals of Lady Knightley of Fawsley, 1915). Many of the papers, including probably the correspondence of William IV in vols. I, III, were acquired by her father, Lieutenant-General Sir Edward Bowater, K.C.H. (d. 1861), who was equerry to both William IV and Prince Albert and Groom-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria. The collection also contains letters addressed to her grandfather, Admiral Edward Bowater, her uncle, Major-General Sir Henry Wheatley, G.C.H., Keeper of the Privy Purse, and his family. Some of the autographs were presented to her by Philip Henry Stanhope, 5th Earl Stanhope (see his letter in Add. 46359 A, f. 196). The names of the writers of letters will be found in the Index to the present Catalogue. Paper and vellum. Six volumes. Various sizes. 17th-20th centt. Bequeathed to the donor in 1946 by her sister, Juliet Claudine, widow of Sir Charles Valentine Knightley, 5th Bart. Presented by Miss Madeline Watson.
