KNIGHTLEY MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. I (ff. i + 116). Forty-four letters from Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, Viscount Nelson, to William Henry, Duke of Clarence, afterwards William IV, chiefly on naval affairs; 1795-1805. Extracts from nearly half of the letters were inaccurately printed by the Rev. J. S. Clarke and J. McArthur in their Life of Admiral Lord Nelson, K.B., from his Lordship's Manuscripts, 2 vols., 1809, and brief pencil notes and (f. 48b) a memorandum by Clarke occur among them. These published extracts were subsequently reprinted by Sir N. Harris Nicolas, The Dispatches and Letters of Vice Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson, 7 vols., 1844 -1846 (see vol. i, pp. viii, ix, xix, xx, for his comments). Copies of eight of the letters, 1799 -1805, are in the Nelson Papers in the Department (Add. MSS. 34953 - 34959, 45963). Many of the letters are identifiable in a list (Add. MS. 34990, f. 60) compiled by Clarke of documents supplied by the Duke of Clarence and edited in the Life. A note in an unidentified hand, 'Ex[amine]d July 14 1847' appears on f. 61. At the beginning of the volume (f. i) is an oval stipple-engraved portrait-bust of Nelson in profile.
