Literary Manuscripts and correspondence of Alfred Russel Wallace, O.M., F.R.S. (b. 1823, d. 1913), naturalist; 1848-1914. Wallace's life and various interests are described in his autobiography, My Life, 2 vols., 1905 (abridged edition, 1 vol., 1908); J. Marchant, Alfred Russel Wallace, Letters and Reminiscences, 2 vols., 1916; W. George, Biologist Philosopher, a Study of the Life and Writings of Alfred Russel Wallace, 1964; A. Williams- Ellis, Darwin's Moon, a Biography of Alfred Russel Wallace, 1966. Other manuscripts of Wallace relating to his travels in the Amazon region and in the E. Indies are in the possession of the British Museum (Natural History) (viz:- drawings of Amazon fish, two registers of mammals, birds, and insects, 1855-1862) and the Linnean Society (viz:- Palms of the Amazon, published 1853, two field notebooks, 1854, and 1855-1859, four volumes of journals 1856-1861, and two notebooks containing notes on Eastern butterflies (circ. 1862) and on Australian birds and hardy plants, also a journal of Wallace's lecture tour in the U.S.A. and Canada, 1886-1887); a certain amount of material was (in 1967) in the possession of his descendants. Twenty-nine volumes. Octavo. Classified as follows:-
