WEIL PAPERS
Papers of Benjamin Bertie Weil (b. 1849, d. 1945) relating to the siege of Mafeking and other events of the South African War; 1899-1901. He was resident representative in the town of the firm of Messrs. Julius Weil, government contractors, and subsequently the 'Mafeking dinner' was normally held in his London home. The papers consist of his own correspondence and other collected papers, mostly official. Included are correspondence and orders of Major-General Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell (Lieutenant-General 1908; 1st Baron Baden-Powell 1929), both as commander in Mafeking until its relief in May 1900 and during subsequent operations. The collection was used by Brian Gardner in his Mafeking: a Victorian legend, 1966. The names of writers of letters are given in the Index to the present Catalogue. Eight volumes. Folio. Presented (together with printed material now transferred to the Department of Printed Books) by Miss E. B. Weil and Mrs Eyles, daughters of B. B. Weil, in memory of their father.
