WEIL PAPERS. Vol. IV (ff. ii+853). Collection of papers, entitled 'Siege of Mafeking: General Orders by Col. R. S. S. Baden-Powell.' A similar volume containing Mafeking General Orders, together with official forms, documents and passes, is among the Baden-Powell Papers at the National Army Museum (no. 6411/1/13). Contents:-
(1) General Orders, notices, etc., issued by Baden-Powell or on his behalf; Sept. 1899-Aug. 1901. Typewritten and mostly signed by Major Lord Edward Herbert Gascoyne-Cecil (K.C.M.G. 1913), as Chief Staff Officer, or other members of Baden-Powell's staff. For drafts of some of the Orders see Add. MS. 46849 above. A selection of Orders are reproduced in facsimile in Souvenir of the Siege of Mafeking, with introduction by C. E. Hands, [1901]. ff. 1-495b.
(2) Garrison Orders and other notices, together with nominal rolls (ff. 581-597), examples of official forms used during the siege, etc. Mostly typewritten copies or printed, but including some papers signed by the Town Commandant or other officers. ff. 496-637.
(3) Correspondence of Baden-Powell with Boer officers and dignitaries, chiefly with Generals Cronje and Snyman; Oct. 1899-Aug. 1900. Partly Dutch with English translations. Typewritten copies and (ff. 692, 693) printed. For drafts of some of the letters see Add. MS. 46850, ff. 59-101, above. Baden-Powell's letter to Snyman, 8 Dec. 1899 (ff. 689, 690) and the English translation of his Notice to the Burghers, 10 Dec. 1899 (in Dutch, ff. 692, 693; translation, ff. 694-696) are printed in F. D. Baillie, Mafeking: a diary of the siege, 1900, pp. 75-80. ff. 638-832.
(4) Printed passes, vouchers, paper currency, programmes of concerts, etc. ff. 833-853. Original rough leather binding.
