Scope & Content:

Papers chiefly of Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Leake (b. 1656, d. 1720) and Stephen Martin Leake II, Garter King of Arms (b. 1702, d. 1773). The original collections of S. M. Leake II passed into the hands of three of his sons, Stephen, John and George. Stephen Martin Leake III presented thirteen volumes, comprising papers of Admiral Leake, to the British Museum in 1793 (now Add. MSS. 5431-5443). The College of Arms acquired the major part of S. M. Leake II's heraldic papers (seventy-five volumes) from the executor of George Martin Leake in 1834 (see A. R. Wagner, Records and Collections of the College of Arms, 1952, p. 41). The present manuscripts were evidently the property of John Martin Leake (his initials appear in many volumes) and descended in his family. The manuscripts owned by S. M. Leake II were listed in a numbered catalogue, 47997, ff. 134-139b (see references in descriptions below to 'cat.'). Volumes in the present collection were later labelled according to a different system of numbering (see references below to 'label'). For details of the binding of some of the volumes in 1740, see 47986 below. Two forms of S. M. Leake II's armorial bookplate are inserted passim. Thirty-eight volumes. Various sizes. Classified as follows:-

A. Admiral Leake Papers (47968-47978).

B. Martin Leake Papers (47979-47999).

The names of all the writers are given in the Index to the present Catalogue. Presented by John Ralph Martin Leake, Esq., having been deposited on permanent loan by himself and Col. Arthur Martin Leake, V. C., in 1950.
