Scope & Content:

The Sussex and Kent deeds (Nos. 2117-2129) are from the muniments of the Cistercian Abbey of Robertsbridge, co. Suss., and mostly bear its pressmarks; with the remainder, they appear later to have formed part of the archives of the Sidney family, Earls of Leicester, Barons and Viscounts De L'Isle and Dudley, of Penshurst Place, co. Kent. For other groups of charters in the Museum that have escaped from the Penshurst archives, apparently in the 18th cent., see C. L. Kingsford, Hist. MSS. Comm., Report on the MSS. of Lord De L'Isle & Dudley, i, 1925, pp. xii sqq. Cf. also Brit. Mus. Quart., vii, 1932-1933, pp. 66-68 and plate xxvii. The present group is distinguished by the quality of the seals. A number of related deeds are calendared by Kingsford, op. cit.
