Mortmain licence by Joan (b. c. 1320, d. 1385), princess of Wales, duchess of Cornwall, countess of Chester, and lady of Wake, to Michael de la Pole (b. c. 1330, d. 1389), knight, chancellor of her son, Richard II, to grant a messuage and land in Cottingham and Willerby to the Maison Dieu next to the Carthusian priory in Myton [i.e. to the Carthusian hospital at Myton]. Given at Wallingford Castle, 22 November 1383.
Endorsed: in an 18th-century hand, very faded, ‘Johanna … / … for / Michael de la Pole … / chancellor …'; in a 15th-century hand, ‘pro Cotyngham’.
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Joan, princess of Wales, oval, red, with a heraldic shield bearing the lions of England on the right, the lions of England and the fleur-de-lys of France on the left two quarters. To the left of the shield is a ‘I’ monogram, an ‘E’ above the shield, and a ‘P’ on its right, with the fragmentary legend, ‘…m iohan…nt… et m…’
