This collection (74 folders) is part of a wider collection including about 1291 folders amounting to about 188,250 pages of text material, in addition to a number of maps on cloth or paper. The collection includes all the files created by either the Bamenda Divisional Office (1917-1949, 1954-1975) or the Bamenda Provincial Office (1949-1954). For files that contain items initiated by either of the above-mentioned Administrative Authorities before 1954 which continued after that date, see also Wum Divisional Office records and Nkambe Divisional Office records.
The 74 folders copied include both textual and graphic materials. The former include hand- and type-written documents, sometimes also in coloured inks. The latter include maps (some of which have been drawn on cloth), photographs (only in black and white and of usually small size), and drawings (some of which are in colour). The files generally contain correspondence, Intelligence reports, Assessment reports, maps, population surveys, pictures, and drawings mostly relating to villages within the territory administered under the Bamenda Division (1915-1949, 1954-1975) or the Bamenda Province (1949-1954).
Mostly English, some documents are written in French, German, or Arabic

- The digital images in this Collection were created as part of the EAP506 A pilot project to survey the Buea Archives and other potentially endangered archives in western Cameroon project with the permission of The National Archives of Cameroon and Cameroon's Ministry of Arts and Culture.

- Received from Dr Jeffrey Good, April 2012 (Accession Record EAP506/1).
- Arrangement:
- The system of arrangement of these folders relies on the actual numbering system used in the Buea National Archives. What is different between the system of arrangement used for the digital copies as opposed to the hard documents concerns the methods used in the identification of collections and series. The system of arrangement used in Buea privileges data retrieval at the expense of provenance: collections are identified by subject, and series are identified based on provenance. In contrast, for digital copies collections have been identified on the basis of provenance (i.e. creator, here Bamenda Division) while series on the basis of subject (here, ethnographic material).
- Administrative Context:
- EAP506 was funded by the Endangered Archives Programme. It created digital copies of records held by the National Archives of Cameroon. The items in this collection were collected and reordered by a team of archivists coordinated by Edwin and Shirley Ardener between 1959 and 1975. It is unclear if items included in this collection were found in Bamenda or in Buea.
