The personal papers of John Ireland previously held by the John Ireland Trust, comprising the composer's correspondence, concert programmes, press cuttings, and other associated material. Ireland's papers were supplemented over time by relevant additional material collected by the Trust since its formation in 1968; the collection therefore includes many letters from Ireland to various correspondents. These letters have been incorporated in the alphabetical sequence of Ireland's personal correspondence (MS Mus. 1749/2). Thus, the collection has a mixed provenance. Where known, the provenance of additional material acquired by the Trust has been noted in the catalogue.
The collection also includes the biographical research correspondence of Ireland's first biographer, John Longmire, and the Ireland-related correspondence of the composer's housekeeper (and sole beneficiary of his estate), Norah Kirby, together with some draft documentation concerning her Will (of 1965).
