Title:

'Views of Calcutta and Barackpore.' Photographer(s): Bourne, Samuel

Scope & Content:

Green half-leather album measuring 363 x 440 mm, with title as above printed on contemporary paper label laid down on front cover. Captions and photographer's reference number are written in pencil in a contemporary hand beneath the print. Spine weak and many pages loose. Prints 19–24a, which form a six-part panoramic view of Calcutta from the Ochterlony Monument, were removed from the album for the 1990 British Library exhibition Calcutta City of Palaces. The panorama is now stored as a single framed strip in the British Library Art Store.

The album comprises a complete set of all the large-size Calcutta and Barrackpore views by Samuel Bourne, listed in the first Bourne and Shepherd catalogue (catalogue numbers 1698–1750).
