Cabinet and carte-de-visite Portraits of Colin Murray, the Murray and McRitchie families and others. Photographer(s): Bourne and Shepherd
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of 28 loose cabinet and carte-de-visite portraits of members of the Murray family and others, with identifications and biographical notes supplied by the donor Mrs Jean Stewart. The collection can be broken down as follows: portraits of Colin Murray, his wife Jane (née McRitchie) and other members of the Murray and McRitchie families in India and Scotland, and the Rev. Dugald McKachin and his wife (prints 1-16), portrait of Samuel Bourne (print 17), portraits of Pastor Kreuznach and Colonel Robertson (prints 18-19), carte-de-visite portraits of unknown sitters (prints 20-27), and a study a Scottish fisher girls (print 28).
The collection contains portraits of the Bourne and Shepherd photographer Colin Murray (1840-1884) and his wife Jane Borthwick (1831-1885), both of whom died of cholera in Calcutta, Colin's brother Kenneth Murray (1831-1901), also a photographer with Bourne and Shepherd, and their brother Donald (1834-1882), a tea planter in Darjeeling and his wife Helen Isabella (1847-1911) and children Norman, Alister and Donald. The McRitchie family portraits are mainly of Jane Borthwick Murray's sisters. After the deaths of Colin and Jane Murray, their children were initially placed in the care of the Rev Dugald McKichan, who was the husband of Jane's sister Eliza, and the collection also includes portraits of these relatives.
