Sladen Collection: Views of Burma. Photographer(s): J. Jackson (and others unknown)
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of 43 loose albumen prints, mounted on card measuring 250 x 310 mm, with handwritten captions beneath, from the collection of Sir Edward Bosc Sladen. These mainly architectural and topographical views show the following locations: Rangoon (1–16), Mandalay (17–25), Moulmein (26–29), Toungoo (Taung-nyu) (30–34), unspecified (35), Pagan (36–38), Prome (39), Mingun (40), Yenangyaung (41), Irrawaddy (42), two portraits (43–44).
Apart from prints 43–44 (which are almost certainly by a photographer other than Jackson), the prints in the collection are of two standard sizes: the majority approximately 140 x 215 mm, with a smaller group measuring approximately 220 x 285 mm. Many are signed in the negative by Jackson and the general similarity of style and format in all the views makes it almost certain that the unsigned material is also his work. A few of the photographs are specifically dated to 1868, and the remainder of the collection seems to fall into a similar period. Jackson's work is of a high standard and these particular prints are in excellent condition.
The photographic business of Bentley and Jackson is listed in Thacker's Bengal Directory from 1865–69, as Jackson and Lourie (probably more correctly Lawrie) in 1870 and as J. Jackson alone from 1871. He briefly entered into another partnership as Klier and Jackson from 1885–88, but from that time on, until his disappearance from the directories after 1915, he practised independently.
