Collection of 163 prints on card mounts, originally bound in two folio volumes, now disbound (2004) and boxed as loose prints. The collection comprises a selection of studies of objects in the British Museum collections, mounted on card with the following printed text beneath each image: 'Copyright British Museum. Photographed and published by C. Bernieri, Caldesi & Co. at P. D. Colnaghi & Co. 13, Pall Mall East London S.W.' Prints 62-100 (Graeco-Roman sculptures) are carbon prints (matt finish), and each bears the following pencilled annotation on the mount: 'Printed by Sarony & Co. Licensees of the Autotype Company. Autotype.' The remaining photographs are all printed in albumen. The present collection, now numbered in a single running sequence, is at variance with the parts listed on the titlepage: parts six and seven (terracottas and Egyptian antiquities) are not present, while a series of miscellaneous prints and Mausoleum frieze prints appear to have replaced them.The collection can be broken down into the following subject areas: 1-34 Parthenon (Elgin) Marbles [Parthenon 1-34], 35-61 Mausoleum at Halicarnassus [Mausoleum 1-26], 62-100 Graeco-Roman sculpture [Graeco-Roman sculptures 1-39], 101-112 Lycian sculptures [Lycian 1-12], 113-115 Bronzes [Bronzes 1-3], 116-133 Miscellaneous [Miscellaneous 1-18], 134-160 Mausoleum Frieze [F. Mauslm. 1-28], 161-163 Assyrian reliefs [Assyrian 1-3]. No date of publication appears on the titlepage, although the British Library catalogue gives 1873-74. While many of the photographs may have been taken at around this date, it is probable that many are earlier. In Charles Thomas Newton's, 'A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus and Branchidae' (2 vols., London, 1862), plate 30 of vol. 2, shows lithographs produced from photographs of a lion's head on the cornice of the Mausoleum. The central image in the plate is so close a copy to print 58 in this series as to make it almost certain that this photograph was the original source.
