Two of the Three Fates. Parthenon No. 22. Photographer: Caldesi, Leonida
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Fine Arts, Photography of
Close view of the two headless figures from right side of the East Pediment (East Pediment L ans M). The identification of two of the three Fates has been discredited: 'There must be a close relationship between the outer pair, one reclining in the lap of the other ... and many believe that the languorous pose of the reclining figure and her voluptuous drapery, slipping off her right shoulder and all but baring her breast, can only belong to Aphrodite. If this is correct, the most likely person to cradle her is her mother Dione, although some scholars suggest Artemis. Others prefer to interpret these figures not as goddesses but as personifications of the Sea (Thalassa) in the lap of Earth (Gaia). The separate seated figure [see print 22] has been thought to be Hestia, the goddess of the hearth, although those who see her neighbour as Artemis tend to prefer the latter's mother, Leto' (B. F. Cook, 'The Elgin Marbles' (British Museum Press, London, 2004), p. 65).
