The wonders of the microscope, photographically revealed, by Olley's patent micro-photographic reflecting process. Photographer(s): Fisher
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: W. Kent and Co., Paternoster Row, London, 1861 [1857-61].
Octavo, quarter leather and brown cloth boards, measuring 252 x 167 mm, marbled endpapers and edges, upper board detached. The work was originally issued in 12 parts between 1857 and 1861, each part containing three photomicrographs, with accompanying letterpress description. A titlepgae, dated 1861, was then issued for the complete set of the work, with a 'Notice' explaining that the irregular appearance of the work was due to 'the numerous contingencies to which every branch of photography is exposed, and especially the variableness of the weather.' Notwithstanding these delays, the anonymous author expresses his confidence that 'we have at length succeeded in producing a volume, which in its illustrations is perfectly unique, and which, though far from assuming perfection in so novel a branch of the art, will, we trust, suffice to show how valuable is the aid which photography may lend to microscopic investigations, as well as to Anatomy, Botany, Chymistry, and other kindred sciences.' Although no photographer is credited in the text, a number of the mounts are blind stamped 'Fisher. Taken by Olley's Patent Micro Photographic Reflecting Process.'
