Quarto, red cloth boards, measuring 252 x 190 mm, with title and illustration of the 'Pioneer' locomotive in gilt on upper board; edges gilt; pp. 114, [5] leaves of folding plates, 48 woodcuts in text and with 8 woodburytype prints mounted one to a page with letterpress captions beneath. The woodburytype illustrations record the construction and opening of the narrow gauge Shanghai-Wusong line, the first railway in China, built in 1876. An account of the history of the line is given in Appendix IV, pp. 92-114.
