Genre: Historical Events
Side view of the locomotive and carriages: 'The contract with Mr. Dixon had specified the 1st July as the day for opening the railway. On the 30th June about 150 of the European residents were invited to make the opening trip in the permanent train, over the first five miles of line from Shanghai to Kangwan. This was successfully performed, in a train laden with about 200 passengers, at the speed of 15 miles an hour. Short as the journey was, refreshments were of course provided at Kangwan, and the Company, the engineer, and the contractor were all duly toasted in the usual English fashion. On Saturday the 1st July, the Chinese were invited to travel free on the railway...On the 3rd July traffic commenced, and the receipts were at once of the most satisfactory character.'
