Saint George's Chapel Windsor. Eighteen views, printed in permanent pigments by the Woodbury process, with descriptive letterpress. Photographer(s): Harrington, John
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, Crown Buildings, Fleet Street. 1872.
Quarto, original maroon cloth binding, with decorative work and title stamped in gilt and black on upper board, measuring 325 x 250 mm, edges gilt, unpaginated. The work consists of eighteen woodburytype views of the exterior and interior of St George's Chapel, Windsor, mounted one to a page on light card, each image preceded by a page of descriptive letterpress. Although the titlepage imprint gives a publication date of 1872, the British Museum acquisition stamp indicate that the work had appeared before the end of 1871. In his introduction to the book (dated September 1871), Harrington refers to the success of his earlier publication and draws attention to the permanence and fidelity of the woodburytype process: It has been with much pleasure and a considerable amount of confidence derived from the success atending my book, 'The Abbey and Palace of Westminster,' published tow years ago, that I have prepared this new work of S. George's Chapel, Windsor, for publication. The photographs, being printed by the new Woodbury process, are absolutely permanent, as much so as a steel-plate engraving, and certainly possessing more accuracy of detail than could possibly be given by any mechanical process. I believe the fact of these photographs being produced in carbon will be in itself a great recommendation; whilst the interest of the subject will hardly be considered inferior to that of the former book...'
