Add.Or.2526-2536
11 drawings from a series depicting occupations, ceremonies, temples, temple cars in South India and composite figures.
By a Tanjore artist, c.1800.
Inscribed on back in ink with numbers and titles.
Gouache; 16.75 by 12 ins.
Purchased 10 July 1968.
Note: These pictures were part of a set of fifty paintings sold at Sotheby’s, 10 July, 1968, lots 171-177.
The study of ‘A crippled beggar and his wife’ (Add.Or.2529) is similar to the painting of a beggar reproduced in Charles Gold, ‘Oriental Drawings’ (London, 1806), plate 39, and attributed to the ‘Tanjore Moochy’. Gold must have acquired it between 1791 and 1798 when he was serving with the Royal Artillery, in the Mysore Wars, very possibly, in Madras before leaving for England in 1798. In Gold’s picture, the towering clouds, the trees and bushes on the horizon and the looped shadows attached to the feet, which are seen in the present set as well as in slightly later Tanjore sets in the collection, are already, standard idioms.
