Crippled beggar and wife.
- Scope & Content:
-
Crippled beggar and wife. The beggar, his leg amputated at the knee, pours rice from a gourd into a dish held by his wife.
Inscribed on back: ‘No.27. Beggars.’
Note: This picture, as already noted, closely resembles plate 39 in Charles Gold, ‘Oriental Drawings’ (London, 1806). There are a number of minor differences: Gold’s picture is in reverse and includes two children standing beside the woman. The beggar is in profile whereas, in the present picture, he is shown full face. He holds the gourd with two hands, instead of one. His stick and crutch are differently placed and he has a bandage round his leg. The palm trees on the horizon are also differently grouped. In all other respects, however, the two pictures are alike and must have been produced by the same shop or family of artists at about the same date.
