Eighty-three watercolour and pencil drawings (6 unfinished) depicting 22 fishes, 36 birds, 19 mammals and 6 reptilia bound in with blank paper to form an album of 144 ff. measuring 15 by 9.25 inches.
These drawings were mostly collected by Colin MacKenzie between 1799 and 1809 during the survey of Mysore, a few were collected in Madras in 1816 and 1 (the pangolin) in Calcutta in 1819. (For Mackenzie, see Archer's Natural History Drawings in the India Office Library, pp.38-9.)
On the cover is the title 'Book 22. No.4. Natural History'. The title page is inscribed 'C. McK. Drawings W. Cat. ccxxiii.4. This volume contains - Drawings, and f.3 'This Book Contains Seven Drawings of Fishes of various Oriental parts. Thirty Six Drawings of Birds, Seventeen Drawings of Quadrupeds, Five Drawings of Snakes &Lizards, Two Drawings of a Lizard & of a Pangolin'. Additional drawings of fishes must have been added after this inscription was made for there are now 22 fishes in the album.
The paintings appear to be by several hands. Some (e.g. the pangolin) may be MacKenzie's own sketches with his own rough notes, but the majority are probably by his draughtsmen and are neatly inscribed by a copyist with numbers, names, place and date, measurements and notes on special features.
From the inscriptions most of the fishes appear to have been found in the 'Hoggree River' (the Hagari, also known as the Vedavathi) and 'Toombudra Rivers' (the Tungabhadra) and painted at Bellary in 1801, although one was painted in 1794 and another from the 'Cubbanee Rivers' (the Kabani) in 1804. The birds are entitled 'The Birds of Bednore & Canara and the Western Ghaats. 1805 1806', but some are dated 1802, 1804, 1807 and 1810. 'Mysore' has been added in pencil after the title. The animals are dated 1804, 1805 and 1807, the reptiles 1803, 1805, 1806 and 1816, and the pangolin 1819
