‘Megalaima haemacephala’
Original inscriptions: ‘Hunnoo Coorootoo Can: / A Singing Bird at Chandergooty March 1806.’
‘This Bird is of the singing kind; almost 5 ½ Inches from the point of the Bill to the Extremity of the Tail ~ 1 ¾ Inches from the Claws to the upper part of the back. It feeds on the Fruit of the Banian Tree. Its early notes heard in the stillness of the calm morning, at this season, among the thick Shades of the magnificent Avenues of Chandergooty, had a pleasing effect; which was heightened by its sudden cessation at times and the Bird could be occasionally distinguished by its vivid Colours hopping across from branch to branch.’
