The James Chicheley Hyde Collection
Lieutenant-Colonel James Chicheley Hyde (1789-1867) was the son of James Chicheley Hyde of the accountant’s office, East India House, and grand-nephew of Henry Chicheley Plowden. He went to India in the Horse Artillery in 1806, retiring as a Major in 1837; he became an Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel on 28 November 1854. The Hyde Collection consists of 87 Company drawings Add.Or.3188-3274 and a collection of natural history drawings (NHD50), and formed part of an extensive bequest made in 1867 by Lieutenant-Colonel James Chicheley Hyde of Timbercombe Lodge, Bridgwater, to the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children, London, of which he was a Governor.
