Two mythological paintings.
By Deccani/Shorapur artists, c.1820.
Note: for the Shorapur stye, see Jagdish Mittal, ‘Deccani Paintings at the Samsthans of Wanaparty, Gadwal and Shorapur,’ ‘Marg,’ vol. XVI, no. 2, March 1963; and Edwin Binney, 3rd, ‘Indian Miniature Painting from the Collection of Edwin Binney, 3rd: The Mughal and Deccani Schools,’ Portland,. 1973. nos. 173-4. It is a Hindu style that flourished in the late 18th - early 19th centuries at the provincial centre of Shorapur in the Bhima-Krishna Doab, and was much influenced by late Hyderabadi painting. It is distinguished by the use of gesso to raise the surface of the painting for details of jewels and gold ornaments.
