Add.Or.3379-3381
Scroll painting cut into three sections illustrating the tigers’ god and scenes of Santal life.
By Babulal and Surendra Citrakar, village Ranga, Rakshi bungalow, Rajmahal subdivision, Santal Parganas district, Bihar, c.1930.
Watercolour; width 277 mm.
Collected by W.G. Archer, 1940. Purchased 1974.
Note: Baul Citrakar of village Ranga, brother of the artists and himself a jadupatua, supplemented his income by cultivating land for which he paid five rupees a year as rent. When interviewed in 1945, after the death of his brothers in 1944, he said he only went out with his scrolls when there was no heavy field-work to be done. He had not been out during the previous December (1944) as he was cutting his paddy then. The family had migrated from Jamtara, spoke Santali and only visited Santal houses.
