ANDREWS, SAMUEL (1767-1807)
Portrait painter, born in Ireland. Applied to the EIC for permission to go to India in 1791, and although the Court of Directors decided that it should be withheld, Andrews appears to have been in Madras sometime during the same year. Early miniatures painted in Madras are known. Between 1794 and 1798 he visited Fort Marlborough, Sumatra, and produced drawings from which engraving were made by J.C. Stadler, published in London in 1799 as ‘Eight views of Sumatra’. By 1798 he had moved to Bengal, where his work became fashionable, and he also went up country. He died at Dinapore near Patna.
